The hard part of having an older friend

I just got off the phone with my friend Shannon. After I hung up I realized that sometimes having a friend that is a little over 2 years older can be a little hard on a kid. Payton is 12 and Aubry is 9 (turns 10 in May) and right now, that age difference has never been more obvious to me. Payton invited Aubry to go with her and another friend to a drive in movie, along with her mom and a friend of hers as well. And for the first time I had to say, "Let me look at the reviews on these PG-13 movies to find out why they are getting a PG-13 rating." So, I did that and decided these movies were simply not appropriate for Aubry to see. I had to be the bearer of bad news and tell Aubry that she could not go. She seemed totally fine since she really didn't know what these movies were about to begin with. But for the first time since they have been friends, I realized that this age difference is going to be difficult at times. I guess I just need to try and prepare for those times as best as possible. Until then, I will enjoy the innocense that comes with being 9!
