I completed my first 5K today.
Hunter and I made the long trip to Dallas this morning at 6:00 a.m. We arrived in plenty of time for me to jog and warm up my muscles, stretch, etc. There were a lot of people there, but it was not an overwhelmingly large crowd. This particular event had one group running a 5K and the other group doing a split, Duathlon: run 2 miles, bike 9.3 and run another 2 miles. The time came for us to get to the starting line and it was a little weird to be in midst of all those runners. When the gun went off, the crowd was just moving together as one until we got to more open road. That was where it started to really thin out. I was passed by many people and I also passed many people. I found my pace and just kept with it. It was a tad bit faster than normal, but not a lot. Overall, there were 37 female runners. I finished 19th among all the females. Within my age group, I finished 3rd out of 7. I am happy with those results. I did not realize until the results were posted that I was on the heels of another runner. I could have finished 2nd if I had just picked it up ever so slightly! But, I am not disappointed at all. I know the next time I run a 5K, I will do even better. I did meet a couple of people that are seasoned runners. I talked to Laurie and Mark who have both run several marathons and 5K's in their many years of running. They asked how many races I have been in and when I replied that this was my first one, they were both very encouraging. Mark mentioned that no one signs up for this particular run as their first because it is one of the toughest courses. He was not the only one that said that, which made me feel pretty good about things!
