This morning, my eyes popped open at 6:05 a.m. I guess that is a good sign. Means I got plenty of sleep, in spite of this head cold, and did not have to wake up to an alarm. I got up from my comfy spot on the couch and got dressed for the 5K run. It was cold cold cold. At least for Texas! It was 41 degrees when I got up and that to me is cold for shorts. So I threw on some pants over my shorts and headed out the door to pick up LaBrett. She looked way sleepy when she came out of her house and I know she is not a morning person so the ride over there was relatively quiet. This was LaBrett's first run so it was pretty cool to see her take it all in. Mind you, I am not a seasoned race event participant but I have done a couple so I already knew what to expect. This particular event was full of kids, families, strollers, etc. They brought in a DJ to play some music and speak a few words of inspiration. That was nice and upbeat and kept people moving. As it got closer to race time, the DJ announced that the runners would go first and the walkers/runners should line up at the back. This was a relief to LaBrett considering she broke her toe a couple of weeks. Kind of hard to run with a broken digit! So, I wished her luck and lined up towards the front while she made her way to back. At first it was very congested because the course we were running on was narrow to begin with and there were soooo many people. The first 4 or 5 minutes was difficult to fall into a comfortable pace. After it thinned out, I fell into my grove and just ran. I was concerned about LaBrett with her injury but I knew this is something she really wanted to do and was going to finish even if that meant walking most of it. Any how, I came across the finish line to see her hubby, mom and sister waiting there to cheer her (us) on. I grabbed the number that was given to me, got my water, walked around a bit to cool off, took off my pants (to reveal the shorts underneath), turned in my number and then realized that I never stopped the timer on my Garmin. Dang it! I know my time was worse than my first 5K back in August, but I really didn't care. I was not 100%. This head cold could not have come at a worse time! Oh well. So anyhow, I cooled off and then went to find Gene. I wanted to make sure that LaBrett was okay so I told him I was going to go find her. I wanted to retrieve her camera too to make sure and get this momentous occasion on film (so to speak!). I walked with her a bit and then jogged ahead so I could snap her picture! Love you girl and am proud of you too, broken toe and all!
I heard the DJ announce that the 1st 100 males and 1st 100 females will be posted later today. Hopefully, they got a more accurate time than what my Garmin shows considering I forgot to stop the timer! In the mean time, my results from the Garmin are posted below.
