Guitar Lessons
This week began the first of many weeks that will include guitar lessons for Aubry. She has been asking to take lessons for a long time now, so for her birthday this year, we presented her with a guitar and lessons. Those lessons finally started this week. I had enough time to pick her up from camp, go home and change, grab a snack and head back up to where she goes to camp so that she could attend her lesson. We show up about 5 early, take a seat and wait for the instructor to show up. I was certain that it was going to be the old lady that came in and appeared to have the personality of spam. But it was not her. Whew. Then another guy walked in with guitar case in hand, small leather folder in the other hand with paper spilling out of it. He also was not the instructor. A few more minutes pass and people are slowly filing in and taking a seat. No instructor yet. I get up to go grab some bottles of water and pass this young kid with a guitar case in hand, folder full of papers…surely this is not the instructor? Too young. I get back with the water and walk in during the introductions. This young, good looking college kid, working on his masters in music, is up front talking about his experiences with music and that he looks forward to teaching this class. I was giggling to myself while observing the behavior of the people. The younger girls seemed to be smitten with him, including my daughter. The older women were somewhat smitten as well but trying to be nonchalant about it. The guys were listening intently hoping this young college stud can teach them how to be chill like him. It was quite humorous. Any how, the lessons got under way and I continued to watch from the back of the room. This can go either way. This young, good looking kid can either cause way too much distraction to the point where they learn nothing. Or this could go the other direction where they hang on every word and learn so much. As an observer, I can take away a lot of what he is teaching and apply it to my own 6 string at home. I did try to get in the class with Aubry, but I was too late to sign up. At least he is not kicking me out of the room as an observer. So really, I am getting lessons for free! And after this first week, Aubry has some things to practice (as do I!). I am really encouraging this because I think she has the potential to be really good. She has long fingers, lots of dexterity and a love for music. Oh, and the really cool part…a friend of mine teaches private lessons. I am going to hit him up after this 6 weeks is over and see if he will work Aubry, provided she is still interested in learning more.
